    Description

    General John McCauley Palmer Instrumental in formation of the Illinois Republican Party in 1856. He was a Lincoln delegate at the Chicago convention. In May 2861 he was commissioned brigadier general, and major general March 16,1863. Command the XIV Corps at New Madrid and Island No. 10, and a brigade during the Corinth campaign and a division at Murfreesboro. He led the XIV at Chattanooga and in the Atlanta campaign.
