Description:
A beautiful very good or better Banknote from Mozambique on the eastern coast of Africa . This is the 1 September 1941 five Escudos, issued during the Portuguese administration. The banknote has a dark brown design on multicolor under-print (containing green, brown, light blue, and pink) on the front. The front also has the name of Banco Nacional Ultramarino (National Overseas Bank) of Lisbon Portugal in the top margin and indicates that it is from the Provincia de Mozambique or the Province of Mozambique. The banknote displays the date and the denomination on the front and only the denomination on the back. The front also depicts a the bank's seal to the right, which displays a steam ship as well as the bust of F. de Oliveira Chamico in a circular frame to the left. The note has the image of a seated woman with sailing ships in the background all in dark green coloring on the back. The note has two signatures on the front. This particular note has the serial number B2,762,291, which is displayed on the front twice in red, but is not displayed on the back. The paper of the note is thick and retains some stiffness but is considerably soiled with tears along the edges, non of which reaches the design. The note also has a long (~1/2") hole or tear in the center from excessive folding and use, it has creases, folds, wrinkling, and some minor staining. Condition:
I would grade this banknote as a very good or better with all the details being still preserved. The note has several vertical and horizontal folds, has general wrinkling, is soiled, has some minor stains and has bumps to the corners, which are fully rounded and have losses. The paper of the note is thick and retains some stiffness but is considerably soiled with tears along the edges, non of which reaches the design. The note also has a long (~1/2") hole or tear in the center from excessive folding and use, it has creases, folds, wrinkling, and some minor staining. The note has no graffiti and no pinholes other than the tear in the center mentioned above. The edges rough with many short tears and losses but none reach the design. The colors are partially faded, dirty and not very distinct but can still be discerned. Please see photo for additional condition information.
